Michael D. “Mike” Lucas, 70, Crestline, died Monday, September 11, 2017 at Crestwood Care Center, Shelby after a battle with cancer.

Mike was born in Marion on January 26, 1947 to the late Bernard and Glenna (Swisher) Lucas.  He married Marilyn S. (Tish) Layland on April 16, 1982 and she survives him.

 

Mike was a 1965 graduate of Galion High School. He proudly served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a retired OTR truck driver, working for Schneider Trucking for 13 years. Mike was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Galion. Some of Mike’s hobbies included fishing, bingo, bowling, and gardening. Mike, an avid fan of all Ohio sports, including the Cleveland Browns, The Ohio State University, “Go Bucks”, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Cleveland Indians. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR with Kasey Kahne being his favorite driver.

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Renee (Jim) Haugen, Livermore, CA; his step-children, Sheila (Jon) Hart, Largo, FL, Rhonda (Jerry) Ernsberger, Galion, Todd (Shawna) Layland, Galion, Brian (Lynne Herrin) Layland, Rex, GA, and Michelle Cooper, Mt. Gilead; his 15 grandchildren; his six great-grandchildren; his sister, Cathy (Denny) Barnes, Medina; his brother, Mark (Marlene) Lucas, Upper Sandusky; his brother-in-law, Donald Patterson, Marysville; numerous nieces and nephews; and his miniature schnauzers, Chance and Bear.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda J. (Nickel) Lucas; and his sister, Connie Patterson.

Friends may call Friday, September 15, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way North, Galion, where a memorial service will follow at 1:00 PM with Chaplain Dave Matos officiating. Full military honors will follow the memorial service at the funeral home.  Burial will be held at a later date.

 

In honor of Mike being an avid dog lover, memorial contributions can be made to the Schnauzer Rescue of Cincinnati in care of the funeral home.
