SHELBY, OH-  Despite losing the team's best golfer from a season ago state medalist Alexis Jones, the Shelby girls golf team has picked up where it left off a season ago. Winning.

"It's been a great experience for us this year," says head coach Brad Ruminski.  It's been fun having my daughter on board kinda filling that spot of another low number every week and I'm hoping that she can do well down there on the big stage."

"I have really been working on my mental game a lot and my ways around the greens," says freshman Amanda Ruminski. I think that's really important especially at state.  There is a lot of pressure there and it's important to refine my mental game."

Senior Clair Korbas feels her team may have a slight advantage having had the experience of being there before.  "In going back there again from last year you understand the flow of things more.  You definitely have more of a relaxed mindset even if you are really trying that first year it's really hard to completely relax.  That's an advantage for our team as compared to others."

For  Senior Emma Roberts, being at state and competing is about recovery.  "When you make bad shots don't dwell on them just move forward and you'll be fine that was my downfall last year.  I would get hung up on a bad shot and I couldn't get over that.  But now this year I'm doing better at that.  I think that's why I've been more consistent."

For Lexi Uplinger, a junior, the signs were there at the beginning of the season that this team had the potential for a return trip to Columbus. "I was a little nervous but starting that first tournament we crushed our school record and took runner-up at another tournament and after that, I thought if we can keep this fire going there was no doubt in my mind we can go back."

"Where Alexis left off, we gained another person who is consistently shooting in the 70's," says sophomore Julia Gutchall.  Amanda (Ruminski) has helped make the transition easy.  Now we have two players hitting in the 70's.  Where last year Clair was hitting in the 70's and 80's now she is more in the 70's"

Shelby's alternate is freshman Gillian Stumbo.

Competition begins on Friday morning and runs through Saturday at Ohio State.  The Shelby girls head to Columbus as district runner-up to Lima Central Catholic and are one of the favorites to finish in the top three again in Division II in 2017.
